HOME BREWING
To make the best tasting coffee, there are six elements to consider: | |
|
 |
| 1.  |
BREWING EQUIPMENT |
|
For the best brewing results, we recommend a French Press pot, or permanent filter coffee maker. If
you are using paper filters, oxygen bleached filters will reduce the tainted flavor. Your coffee maker
should be brewing within a water temperature range of 195 to 205 degrees. |
 |
| 2.  |
WATER |
|
Water makes up the majority of brewed coffee, yet it is the most commonly over looked ingredient. Always
start with fresh water. If you do not have a filtered system for your water, we recommend quality bottled
spring water. The extraction process needs some minerals, so do not use distilled water. |
 |
| 3.  |
GRIND |
|
Grinding prior to brewing is best. The size of your coffee grind changes the timing of the extraction of the
coffee. If the grind is too fine, the coffee will be over-extracted and will taste bitter. If the grind is too
coarse, your coffee will taste weak. We recommend a burr grinder. These grinders have a small hopper on top
where the whole beans are placed. Gravity pulls the beans down through the burr blade and grinds the coffee,
which enters the reservoir. The grind can be adjusted from a fine expresso grind to a coarse French press pot
grind.
If you have a top-loading grinder that activates when pressed down, below are recommendations for a new grinder
with a fresh blade:
French press - coarse grind 15 seconds
Drip brewer - 20 seconds for a permanent filter and 25 seconds for a paper filter |
 |
| 4.  |
MEASUREMENT |
|
If coffee is brewed too strongly, it will mask some of the undertones of flavor in the coffee. It is like cooking,
every spice will give a distinguished flavor to your food. However, too much of one spice will take over the pallet.
At Java Brewing Company, we recommend one tablespoon per six ounces of water (typically, a home brewer cup measurement
is six ounces). You can adjust to your taste by adding more grind for a stronger flavor and less for a lighter taste. |
 |
| 5.  |
STORAGE |
|
Keeping your open coffee bag at room temperature in an air tight container is best. Do not store your open coffee bags
in the refrigerator or freezer. This will dry your beans and taint them with other flavors from the items in your
refrigerator. You can place coffee in the freezer, as long as it is in a heat sealed bag, but once it's been opened leave
it at room temperature. |
 |
| 6.  |
DRINKING |
|
Brewed coffee tastes best within the first 20 minutes of brewing. Coffee left on the built-in burner, common on most
home brewers, will scald. To avoid scalding, without guzzling a full pot in 20 minutes, pour the coffee into a thermal
carafe. This will keep the coffee hot, without burning it. There are home brewers on the market now that brew directly
into a thermal carafe. |
